I too am vegetarian by choice: compassion for animals, sustainability ... a variety of pretty compelling reasons. But, i was vegetarian many years ago and had to take a break because I became a veggi-nazi. So, do be compassionate to animals (by not eating them), but also be compassionate to yourself (by allowing the occasional bit of meat if you find you occasionally desire it or are in a situation where it needs to happen), be compassionate to others (by not being rude when they have not cooked a completely separate meal for you when you are visiting at holiday, or when someone remembers they accidentally used chicken broth in the corn chowder they offered as vegetarian fare) and do not make being a vegetarian a fundamentalist religion (by insisting others share your views on the matter). With compassion all around it becomes a much more sustainable lifestyle (and people won't resent you or the choice you made and you will thus be a better ambassador for that choice).
