Grudgingly Spelunking
Friday, October 19th, 2007Atherton, and I have been getting very into horror movies lately. For the last 2 years I was in England I wasn’t allowed to watch horror movies because someone, no names mentioned, was too much of a puss. If I tried to put one on he would whine and cry and get all cranky and it just wasn’t worth the effort.
The resurgence of my interest started almost 2 weeks ago when Atherton put on The Grudge. I had been upstairs trying to sleep off a migraine and it was on when I woke up. Since that movie has the power to make me pee my pants, I opted to take Betsy to the park for an hour while the movie finished. When I got back home the movie was over.
A couple days after that, he had put the movie in again and I decided to watch a few minutes before I went to bed. I promised myself that I would go to bed before the scary parts started. That was a lie. It was a lie to myself. I hate lying to myself. I feel like such a jerk.
When the movie was over I realized I had the blanket held in my hands so tightly they hurt. It was worth it though. Even though I had to look away at times or hide under my blanket (which provided no solace* but I did it anyway) I will still entertained. Not to mention the fact that I had worked myself up so much that I didn’t have a problem going to sleep… with the bathroom light left on… all night.
Next came The Descent.
I was some what reluctant at first because I had heard mixed reviews. The last horror movie I watched that had mixed reviews was The Hills Have Eyes. What a piece of CRAP that movie was! It’s bad when you’re rooting for the family of deformed freaks to kill every single person just so the movie can be over.
Anyway, the first hour seemed kind of uneventful. Ohhh…. it’s sweaty women spelunking in tight clothes. OH NO… so disturbing.
When we finally meet the bad guys I screamed my head off. There was NO warning. No scary music. Nothing. They were just there and ready to attack. I screamed then Atherton screamed because I scared him with my screaming. I screamed again because I didn’t think he was going to scream. He screamed because I had screamed a second time and the process repeated a couple more times.
In all the movie was pretty awesome. I expect anything that’s labeled horror to be scary. When they’re stupid and hokey I just get a little angry. These are two movies that I’ll be able to watch anytime I get the urge to leave a puddle on my couch.
*If you’ve seen The Grudge you understand why there is no comfort in hiding under your blankets.
